Generally speaking, a business that is growing is a business that is hiring. Businesses that feel confident in their future are the businesses that are interested in adding staff and expanding in general. The hiring of an employee has risks associated with it, but the benefits can also be immense.

Why should I hire?

One of the advantages of hiring someone is that it allows your existing employees to reduce their workload. If they are working with a full plate of activities, this may make them more effective. If they now have more time to do other activities, your existing employees can set about doing tasks in new areas. These new areas can be in areas that your company has never worked in before, and you can move your business towards new goals and accomplishments in this regard.

What are the disadvantages of hiring?

Any new hire requires a significant investment not only of money, but of time and resources. A new employee will automatically require some training, regardless of how experienced he or she is. The reason for this is that your business will have a certain way of doing things your new employee will have to learn. However, you should be open to ideas that your new employee may have on how things could be done in a different fashion. These new ideas may radically transform your company for the better. Regardless, there will be a learning period.

Outside of the way of doing things, a new person brings a new personality to your team, and a new personality can make things difficult for others. Everyone in your business has their own space and their own unique behaviors, and a new person can disrupt all of that. It’s up to everyone at the company to make the new person feel welcome and give that person the best chance to succeed.

When should you absolutely NOT hire?

There are two main reasons not to hire: not enough funds to pay a salary and not enough work load for a full time employee. Many companies believe they need to hire simply because that is what a competitor is doing, or because they feel it is a sign of success to have a bigger team. However, hiring should be done out of necessity rather than to follow the crowd. Another option if you like the funds or don’t have enough work for a full time person is to hire a part-time employee or hire an independent contractor that you just pay by the hour. Explore all your options before bringing someone on full time.

Hire when ready!

All in all, hiring is an enormous time and energy commitment. But to grow your business, it is often essential. Make careful considerations when you bring someone on board, but remember that a new hire has the potential to change everything for the better!
